Refuse to Recuse
Judge Taylor refuses Attorney General's request to step down

ROGERSVILLE - Hawkins County General Sessions Court Judge Jay Taylor refused two formal requests to recuse himself from the bench, Wednesday morning, rebuffing motions filed by the District Attorney General and the Third Judicial District Public Defender's Office. The morning after formal charges alleging theft were filed against Judge Taylor by the Tennessee Court of the Judiciary, the motions were filed in Taylor's own court "formally requesting Judge James F. Taylor recuse himself from hearing cases based on the formal charges of violating the Code of Judicial Conduct." Taylor denied both motions and continued hearing cases Wednesday. Attorney William Phillips, who had a hearing set in Taylor's court Wednesday, requested the case be reset because of the cloud over Taylor.
